The Scallops and Shells Shawl is worked from the top down, starting at the top with a long chain. Subsequent rows become progressively shorter (with widening shells) to end the body of the shawl with a single shell at the center bottom. The edging is worked with a row of single crochet stitches on the top and bottom edges, two rows of 4-chain spaces on the top edge, and a pattern of shells scalloping the bottom edge.
